Detective in Widmer case to be questioned again about personnel file

Posted by Jonathan Watling \\ Jul 15, 2011

CINCINNATI — Ryan Widmer’s defense attorneys couldn’t use former Hamilton Twp. Detective Jeff Braley’s false employment records against him, but attorneys in a civil lawsuit against him will.

A federal judge approved a second deposition of Braley by attorneys representing the Pritchard family during a hearing on Friday. The suit filed several years ago accuses Braley, former Police Chief Frank Richardson, Lt. Phil Johnson, former officer Roger Gilbert and his wife Gail of staging an improper raid on their home in 2007.

Widmer is serving 15 years to life in prison for drowning his wife Sarah in the bathtub of their home in August 2008. Braley was the lead detective on the case and Widmer’s attorneys tried twice to get his falsified employment records before jurors, to discredit him. The judge

Ashurst seals Indian best friend agreement

Posted by admin \\ Jul 15, 2011

Ashurst has entered into a best-friends arrangement with Mumbai firm Indian Law Partners (ILP).

The non-exclusive tie-up will see the two firms refer work to each other on a preferential basis.

ILP, which was created earlier this year by former DSK Legal partners Gopika Pant and Piyoosh Gupta, also houses one counsel and 10 associates.

Pant, who set up a firm also called ILP in 1999, which merged with DSK in 2004, specialises in Indian corporate and commercial law, including cross border commercial transactions, private equity investments and acquisitions.

Gupta is also a corporate and commercial lawyer, with a broad practice covering infrastructure, acquisitions, real estate, franchising and retail and employment law.

The referral agreement comes a little more than a year after Ashurst was forced to close its liaison office in Delhi after a long-running case in which the Bombay High Court ruled against the practice of law by foreign firms in India.

The man shot and killed by San Francisco police after he allegedly fired at them during a foot chase in Bayview-Hunters Point was identified Monday as a Washington state parolee sought for questioning in the slaying last week of a woman in Seattle.

Kenneth Harding, 19, who was killed Saturday afternoon, was paroled in April from prison in Washington after serving time for an incident in Seattle in which he tried to force a 14-year-old girl into prostitution, court records show.

Seattle police were seeking Harding as a person of interest in a shooting Wednesday that killed 19-year-old Tanaya Gilbert and wounded three others, authorities said.

Florida Democrats remain shut out of power and cash

Posted by Jesse OLoghlen \\ Jul 14, 2011

Out-of-power Democrats are bringing up the rear in the campaign money chase.  While Republican House candidates averaged $28,769 during the six months, Democratic House hopefuls raised $7,650. Senate Republican candidates averaged $132,551, while Democrats collected $50,033 on average.

And the disparity shows how fractured politics has become. The Democrats who arent raising money sit in perfectly safe seats. The Republicans gorging on millions of dollars from business lobbyists and big donors are doing so to maintain their stone-fisted grip on power. And theyve done so with scientific precision for years.

Suspect in Laurens County deputy shooting released from hospital

Posted by Jonathan Watling \\ Jul 14, 2011

The man accused of killing his girlfriend and a Laurens County sheriff’s deputy is out of the hospital for the first time since a shooting spree Wednesday.

Bennie Ray Brown, Jr., 39, left Greenville Memorial Hospital on Saturday afternoon. Doctors were treating him for a gunshot wound in his leg.

An arraignment is set for 9 a.m. Sunday in Laurens County. Then, authorities said they plan to take Brown to the detention center in Abbeville. The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office said it made that decision to ensure his safety while he’s in custody.

Deputies said Brown killed Nicole Kingsborough on Wednesday, shooting her in the parking lot at the Fehrer Plant where she worked.

When Laurens County deputies went to find Brown at his home in Clinton, they say he fired on the officers, killing Deputy Roger Rice, 29.

Rice’s family received mourners Saturday at The Kennedy Mortuary in Laurens. A funer
