Family of Train Victim Faces Bystander’s Suit

(CN) – A woman who was hit by the flying body of a Chicago man after a train accident can sue the dead man’s family, an Illinois appeals court ruled.On a rainy Saturday morning in 2008, Hiroyuki Joho was using a crosswalk over the train tracks to get from one platform to the other at the Edgebrook Metra station, on the corner of Lehigh and Devon Avenues in Chicago. The 18-year-old was carrying an umbrella and computer bag as a bright blue train bore down on him at 73 mph, sounding its horn and flashing its lights.Witnesses were unsure of whether Joho realized the train was coming, but he was smiling at commuters on the opposite platform when the train hit him.The train sent Joho’s 100 feet up, hitting the backside of a commuter on the platform, 58-year-old Gayane Zokhrabov.

Tourist admits causing deadly West Coast crash

A German tourist has admitted causing a head-on collision which killed his partner and a Dunedin man on the West Coast.

Mathias Mandlmeier, 45, appeared at the Christchurch District Court at the Nga Hau e Wha marae today where he pleaded guilty to charges of careless driving causing the death of two people and causing injury to another.

He has been ordered to pay $10,000 for the harm he caused. He was also disqualified from driving for a year but is due to leave the country within days.

The accident happened on December 28 on State Highway 6, near Lake Moeraki in South Westland.

David Henry Morris, 82, died at the scene, and his son Myles David Morris, who was driving the car, was taken to Dunedin Hospital with abdominal injuries.

    PHOENIX – An 11-year-old girl who was attacked while walking to school with her 8-year-old brother was able to fight him off and escape. Now, she’s talking to FOX 10 about her traumatic experience in efforts to keep other kids safe.

    She’s frightened and shaken up after this morning but she and her 8-year-old brother are speaking out after Tuesday morning’s attack near Griffith Elementary in Phoenix.

    “I was running as fast as I can to get home because it was the closest,” says the victim.

    — In many ways distinctly different, Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney took near opposite paths to twin victories in Iowa’s presidential caucuses.

    The little-known, cash-strapped Santorum broke through as the leading conservative contender by cutting a painstaking path through every Iowa county. Romney, the GOP’s deep-pocketed national front-runner, wanted to avoid being seen as underperforming and captured the state’s more urban areas with little effort.

    Both of their strategies went almost perfectly according to plan.
