Son Injured at Home Will Not Get a Big Pay Day

By JEFF D. GORMAN

(CN) – A man who sued his parents after he fell off a ladder while hanging Christmas lights does not deserve much more than it costs to pay his medical bills, a Texas appeals court ruled.Tony Dustin Perez broke his elbow in the fall at the home of his parents, Antonio and Marsha Perez, in November 2006.He sought $200,000 in the lawsuit, but a San Patricio County jury awarded him just $7,400, which included $5,000 for surgery to remove the hardware that doctors had implanted to keep his elbow together.Ironically, Dustin Perez still works at the used car lot owned by his father, who testified that his son makes good money.Dustin’s physical strength factored into the trial as well.

Firefighters battling flames at former Camillus Cutlery building

Posted by Jonathan Watling \\ Feb 10, 2013

Syracuse, N.Y. — Camillus firefighters and volunteers from several other Onondaga County fire departments are on the scene of a fire at the former Camillus Cutlery building in Camillus.

Firefighters have been directed to exit the building at 4 Genesee St. and try to extinguish the flames from outside. Part of Genesee Street has been closed to traffic.

Sweet Spot Development purchased the two Camillus Cutlery buildings for $1, at an auction in 11 and planned to transform one of them into a medical wellness facility and upscale apartments.

There were only 35 people working at the cutlery when it closed in February 7. In its heyday during World War II, more than 7 employees made military knives there for U.S.

Ventura sees increase in property crimes

Posted by Jai Porteous \\ Feb 08, 2013

Ventura experienced 17 percent more property-related crimes in 2012 than in 2011, police reported this week.

One of the biggest jumps came from vehicle thefts, police said, noting that 282 vehicles were reported stolen in Ventura in 2012, compared to 195 the year before.

Many of the vehicles stolen were either older models or ones that had been left unlocked, sometimes with the keys inside, police said.

There were also nearly 500 residential burglaries in the city last year, 21 percent more than a year earlier, according to the annual crime report released by police.

Authorities blame the increase in property crime on a combination of three factors a weak economy combined with what police said is the need for more officers in the city and an inmate early release program instituted by the state in October 2011.

“Each of these contributed to the increase,” Darin Schindler, a Ventura police commander, said Wednesday.

Many of the residential burglaries are committed during the day when no one is home, Schindler said.

Burglars often will knock on the front door to see if anyone is home, he said. Sho

Alabama Hostage Safe After FBI Kills Kidnapper with Help of Military Drone

Posted by Jonathan Watling \\ Feb 07, 2013

A 5-year-old Alabama boy is safe after authorities killed his kidnapper.

An armed man who had been holding a 5-year-old boy hostage in an underground bunker is dead and the boy has been released unharmed, ending a six-day standoff, law enforcement authorities said on Monday.

Stephen E. Richardson, a special agent with the F.B.I., said that the child, identified only as Ethan, was rescued here at about 3:12 p.m. The authorities said that Jimmy Lee Dykes, 65, a Vietnam veteran with a deep distrust of the government, fatally shot a school bus driver last Tuesday before grabbing the boy and taking him to the bunker, which he built in his yard.

For days, law enforcement officers tried to negotiate a peaceful end to the standoff, but refused to discuss details of negotiations, except to suggest that the boy, who they said has a form of autism, was safe.

Within the past 24 hours, negotiations deteriorated and Mr.
