PHOENIX – Saturday was a sad day of remembrance for a valley temple.

It was just over 20 years ago when nine people were massacred in a west valley Buddhist temple.

On Saturday night, worshipers honored those who were killed.

There are still more questions than answers in the gruesome murders that happened two decades ago.

While the Buddhist community has forgiven, it still hasn’t forgotten Aug. 10, 1991.

The peaceful serenity was broken by a crime so heinous that no one could understand why it occurred.

Nam Pet, of the International Thai Leadership Council, was there on that tragic day.

“The stench of the blood and death smell was absolutely overwhelming,” Pet said.

On Saturday, nearby residents joined the Buddhist community in honoring the victims.

Valley teens Jonathon Doody and Alex Garcia were both convicted, and they said robbery was their motive.

It was a confession that came with controversy, with many pointing to a botched investigation and forced confession.
