Trail of Blood Leads to Body in San Francisco’s Marina

Dennis Knowlton was discovered floating in the water in jeans and a white tank top shirt shortly after 6:30 a.m. Tuesday. It is unclear why he was in San Francisco, but a spokeswoman for a joint Army-Air Force base in Washington state said police there were in contact with San Francisco investigators.

Knowlton’s body was found at the end of a trail of blood that led from in front of the U.S. post office on the 3700 block of Buchanan Street near Beach Street, police said. Officer Albie Esparza, a police spokesman, confirmed that the blood was Knowlton’s and that he had been stabbed with “some sort of sharp instrument.”

The medical examiner’s office said, however, that it had not yet determined Knowlton’s cause of death.

A dive team searched for evidence Wednesday in the water near where Knowlton was found. Investigators are also examining a green Volvo found at Buchanan and Bay streets that a witness said was connected to the case, but police would not provide specifics.

San Francisco police circulated flyers throughout the Marina neighborhood Wednesday asking for help. In the flyer, police said Knowlton had been wearing red-and-black tennis shoes and may have had a black shirt on at some point.

Investigators would not say why they were in contact with officials at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, a short distance northeast of Knowlton’s hometown of Olympia. Catherine Caruso, a spokeswoman for the base, confirmed that police there were “assisting as requested” in the investigation.

Joint Base Lewis-McChord is home to about 36,000 service members, 11,000 civilian employees and about 56,000 family members of military dependents assigned to the base.

A man who answered the phone Wednesday at the home of Knowlton’s parents in Olympia declined to comment.

Brooklyn White, a friend of Knowlton’s, said in a Facebook message that Knowlton was a “great guy” who always knew how to cheer people up.

“He was really excited to go to San Francisco and get his life on track,” she said. “He was always smiling and laughing.”
