Pharmacist Jerome Jay Ersland was reprimanded while in the military for “wrongful and unlawful possession of the drug Ketamine,” according to a presentence report in his murder case.

Ersland, 59, served as a pharmacist in the U.S. Army and then in the U.S Air Force. The reprimand is noted in an evaluation of his Air Force performance from Sept. 2, 1998, to Sept. 1, 1999, according to the presentence report.

Ersland was honorably discharged in July 2000 after he was diagnosed with vertigo, a probable inner ear disorder known as Meniere’s disease and other ear conditions.

The presentence report quotes an Air Force memo that described Ersland as “an incredibly gifted pharmacist with a good career.

“Unfortunately, his current medical condition makes it difficult for him to maintain his concentration for even short periods of time,” the memo stated. “This lack of awareness could lead to mistakes that neither Lt. Col. Ersland nor I would want to occur.”
